What Create Fillable PDF does
Create Fillable PDF turns an ordinary PDF into a form that people can fill in on a computer or phone. You draw text fields, checkboxes and dropdown lists on top of the existing layout, for example over the lines of a registration form, a questionnaire or an order sheet.
When you click Save PDF, pdf-lib adds real interactive form fields (AcroForm fields) to the document and saves it with -fillable at the end of the name. The original page content is not changed, and the fields work in standard PDF viewers.
How to use Create Fillable PDF
- Drop the PDF you want to work on.
- Choose a tool from the toolbar and click on the page to use it.
- Move, resize or delete anything you added before saving.
- Click Save PDF to download the result.
When to use Create Fillable PDF
- Convert a scanned paper registration form into a PDF that club members or patients can complete on screen.
- Add text fields and checkboxes to a client intake questionnaire so clients can fill it in and send it back by email.
- Build a simple order sheet with dropdowns for size or color that customers can complete without printing it.
- Make a worksheet fillable so students can type their answers instead of printing the pages and writing by hand.
Settings explained
- Text field
- Drag a box where people should type, such as a name, email or address line. Make the box slightly larger than the printed line so typed text fits. Taller boxes become multi-line fields.
- Checkbox
- Click to add an 18-point square checkbox, or drag to draw one at a custom size. Use checkboxes for yes or no questions, agreements and lists where several answers can be chosen.
- Dropdown
- Drag a box to create a list from which people choose one option. While it is selected, type the choices in the toolbar box separated by commas, for example Small, Medium, Large.
- Text
- Adds fixed text that is not a field, such as a label, an instruction or a heading next to a field. It is part of the page and cannot be changed by the person filling in the form.
- Font size
- Sets the size of fixed text added with Text, from 6 to 96 points, default 14. For text fields it decides when a box allows several lines: boxes taller than 2.5 times this value become multi-line.
What is PDF?
PDF (Portable Document Format) is a document format introduced by Adobe in 1993. Files use the .pdf extension.
PDF was created by Adobe to show documents the same way on any device and printer. A PDF file describes pages with text, fonts, vector graphics and images at fixed positions. It became an open ISO standard in 2008, and there are special variants such as PDF/A for archiving and PDF/X for printing.
PDF is the right choice for documents that must look the same everywhere, such as contracts, invoices, forms, manuals, reports and files for printing. It also supports digital signatures, fillable forms, comments and password protection.
PDF is hard to edit, because text is stored as positioned pieces, not as flowing paragraphs. Converting a PDF to Word may change the layout. Scanned PDFs contain pictures of text, not real text, unless OCR has been applied.
All major web browsers open PDF files directly. Windows, macOS, iOS and most Android phones include a PDF viewer, and Adobe Acrobat Reader and many free apps can view, annotate and fill PDF forms on all platforms.
Why use FansBond Create Fillable PDF
Most online converters upload your files to their servers. FansBond Create Fillable PDF does the work inside your browser instead, using WebAssembly and modern browser APIs. Your files stay on your device, which is safer for private photos, contracts and unreleased work, and it is often faster because nothing has to upload or download.
There are no queues, no watermarks and no account. Once the page has loaded, the tool keeps working even on a slow connection.
Tips for the best result
- Fields are named automatically as text_1, check_2, select_3 and so on, numbered in the order you added them. This matters if you collect answers with software.
- Zoom in with your browser before placing small checkboxes, so they line up exactly with the boxes printed on the form.
- Test the form after saving: open it in a PDF viewer, fill in every field, and check that the text fits and each dropdown shows all its choices.
- People who have filled in the form can use Flatten PDF to turn their answers into fixed page content before they send it back.
How Create Fillable PDF works in your browser
Each page is rendered with pdf.js so you can see it and place items exactly. What you add is kept as separate objects until you save, so you can move, resize or delete it at any time.
When you save, pdf-lib writes your text, drawings, images and fields into the original PDF. The original page content is not re-rendered, so existing text stays sharp and selectable.
Privacy and security
Most online converters upload your files to a server, process them there and keep a copy for some time. Create Fillable PDF works differently: the code is downloaded to your browser once, and your files are read and written only on your device.
You can check this yourself: after the page has loaded, turn off your internet connection and the tool still works. This makes it safe for contracts, IDs, medical records, private photos and unreleased work.
Frequently asked questions
Is Create Fillable PDF free?
Yes. Create Fillable PDF on FansBond is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your files are processed in your browser on your own device. They are never sent to FansBond or anyone else.
Do I need to install any software?
No. It works in any modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your device, the practical limit depends on your device's memory. Most phones handle files of a few hundred megabytes, and computers handle much more.
Can people fill in the form without special software?
Yes. The fields are standard PDF form fields, so they work in the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, in the built-in PDF viewers of Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and in Apple Preview. Some very simple viewer apps display the form but do not let people type into it.
Can I add radio buttons or signature fields?
No. The tool creates text fields, checkboxes and dropdown lists. It does not create radio button groups, date pickers or certificate signature fields. For a question where only one answer is allowed, use a dropdown.
Can I make a scanned paper form fillable?
Yes. Fields are placed by position, so they work on a scanned page just as on a PDF made from a text document. Draw each field over the blank line or box on the scan. The scanned text itself stays an image and cannot be selected.
