What Unlock PDF does
Unlock PDF removes the encryption from a PDF so it opens without a password and can be printed, copied, edited, merged or compressed. It is meant for your own files, for example a bank statement or payslip that arrives protected with a password you know.
The file is decrypted with qpdf. You enter the password once, and qpdf writes a new copy without encryption or permission restrictions, named with -unlocked. Content, links, bookmarks and form fields stay as they were. The tool cannot find or bypass a password you do not know.
How to use Unlock PDF
- Drop your PDF files into the box.
- Set the options for unlock pdf.
- Click Apply. The PDF is processed on your device.
- Download the new PDF.
When to use Unlock PDF
- Remove the password from monthly bank statements so they can be merged into one file for a mortgage or loan application.
- Unlock a payslip or tax document from your employer so it can be uploaded to a portal that rejects protected files.
- Remove printing and copying restrictions from a PDF you created yourself and no longer need to protect.
- Unlock a protected file before compressing, splitting or signing it, because those tools cannot work on encrypted PDFs.
Settings explained
- Password
- Enter the password used to open the file, or its owner password. Leave it empty for PDFs that open without a password but block printing, copying or editing; those restrictions can be removed without one.
- Add more files
- Add several protected PDFs to unlock them in one run. The same password is used for every file, so this works best for documents that share a password, such as statements from one bank.
What is PDF?
PDF (Portable Document Format) is a document format introduced by Adobe in 1993. Files use the .pdf extension.
PDF was created by Adobe to show documents the same way on any device and printer. A PDF file describes pages with text, fonts, vector graphics and images at fixed positions. It became an open ISO standard in 2008, and there are special variants such as PDF/A for archiving and PDF/X for printing.
PDF is the right choice for documents that must look the same everywhere, such as contracts, invoices, forms, manuals, reports and files for printing. It also supports digital signatures, fillable forms, comments and password protection.
PDF is hard to edit, because text is stored as positioned pieces, not as flowing paragraphs. Converting a PDF to Word may change the layout. Scanned PDFs contain pictures of text, not real text, unless OCR has been applied.
All major web browsers open PDF files directly. Windows, macOS, iOS and most Android phones include a PDF viewer, and Adobe Acrobat Reader and many free apps can view, annotate and fill PDF forms on all platforms.
Why use FansBond Unlock PDF
Most online converters upload your files to their servers. FansBond Unlock PDF does the work inside your browser instead, using WebAssembly and modern browser APIs. Your files stay on your device, which is safer for private photos, contracts and unreleased work, and it is often faster because nothing has to upload or download.
There are no queues, no watermarks and no account. Once the page has loaded, the tool keeps working even on a slow connection.
Tips for the best result
- If a file needs a password to open and you leave the field empty, the tool reports that the PDF could not be processed. Enter the password and try again.
- Passwords are case sensitive. If the password is rejected, check Caps Lock and the keyboard language before you try again.
- Banks and employers often build the password from your date of birth, customer number or tax number. Check the email or letter that came with the file.
- Without encryption, anyone who gets the unlocked copy can open it. Store it in a safe place, or delete it when you no longer need it.
How Unlock PDF works in your browser
Encryption and decryption use qpdf, a widely used open-source PDF toolkit, compiled to WebAssembly. Protected files use 256-bit AES, the strongest encryption method in the PDF standard.
The password you type is used only inside your browser tab to encrypt or decrypt the file. It is never sent anywhere and is not stored after you close the page.
Privacy and security
Most online converters upload your files to a server, process them there and keep a copy for some time. Unlock PDF works differently: the code is downloaded to your browser once, and your files are read and written only on your device.
You can check this yourself: after the page has loaded, turn off your internet connection and the tool still works. This makes it safe for contracts, IDs, medical records, private photos and unreleased work.
Frequently asked questions
Is Unlock PDF free?
Yes. Unlock PDF on FansBond is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your files are processed in your browser on your own device. They are never sent to FansBond or anyone else.
Do I need to install any software?
No. It works in any modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your device, the practical limit depends on your device's memory. Most phones handle files of a few hundred megabytes, and computers handle much more.
Can I unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?
No. Files that need a password to open can only be unlocked with the correct password. The tool does not guess or crack passwords, and an AES-encrypted PDF cannot practically be opened without it. Ask the sender for the password or for an unprotected copy.
What is the difference between an open password and restrictions?
An open password, also called a user password, is needed to view the file. Restrictions are set with an owner password and only limit actions such as printing or copying, while the file still opens normally. This tool removes both; only the open password must be entered.
Does unlocking change the content?
No. qpdf only removes the encryption. Pages, text, images, links, bookmarks, form fields and metadata stay the same, and the file size usually changes only a little. A certificate-based digital signature in the file will show as invalid, because the bytes of the file change.
