What Split PDF does
Split PDF cuts one PDF into several smaller PDF files. It is useful when a scanner saved a whole stack of documents as one file, when a long report has to be sent in parts, or when every page, such as an invoice or certificate, belongs to a different person.
pdf-lib copies the pages of each part into a new document without re-rendering them, so text stays selectable and quality does not change. Each part is named after the original file and its page numbers, for example report-1-3.pdf. The original file is not changed.
How to use Split PDF
- Drop your PDF files into the box.
- Set the options for split pdf.
- Click Apply. The PDF is processed on your device.
- Download the new PDF.
When to use Split PDF
- Split a scanned batch of 30 invoices, one per page, into separate files for an accounting system.
- Divide a long PDF of class handouts into one file per lesson so students can download only what they need.
- Cut a 200-page report into parts that fit the attachment limit of an email service or upload form.
- Separate a scan of many two-page forms into one PDF per form by choosing Every N pages and setting it to 2.
Settings explained
- Split mode
- Every page, the default, makes one PDF per page. Every N pages makes files with the same number of pages. Custom ranges lets you write exactly which pages go into each file.
- Pages per file
- Shown for Every N pages. Sets how many pages each file gets, from 1 to 1000; the default is 2. If the page count does not divide evenly, the last file contains the remaining pages.
- Page ranges
- Shown for Custom ranges. Separate the files with commas or semicolons: 1-3, 4-6, 7- creates three files. 7- runs to the last page and -3 means pages 1 to 3. Pages you do not list are left out.
What is PDF?
PDF (Portable Document Format) is a document format introduced by Adobe in 1993. Files use the .pdf extension.
PDF was created by Adobe to show documents the same way on any device and printer. A PDF file describes pages with text, fonts, vector graphics and images at fixed positions. It became an open ISO standard in 2008, and there are special variants such as PDF/A for archiving and PDF/X for printing.
PDF is the right choice for documents that must look the same everywhere, such as contracts, invoices, forms, manuals, reports and files for printing. It also supports digital signatures, fillable forms, comments and password protection.
PDF is hard to edit, because text is stored as positioned pieces, not as flowing paragraphs. Converting a PDF to Word may change the layout. Scanned PDFs contain pictures of text, not real text, unless OCR has been applied.
All major web browsers open PDF files directly. Windows, macOS, iOS and most Android phones include a PDF viewer, and Adobe Acrobat Reader and many free apps can view, annotate and fill PDF forms on all platforms.
Why use FansBond Split PDF
Most online converters upload your files to their servers. FansBond Split PDF does the work inside your browser instead, using WebAssembly and modern browser APIs. Your files stay on your device, which is safer for private photos, contracts and unreleased work, and it is often faster because nothing has to upload or download.
There are no queues, no watermarks and no account. Once the page has loaded, the tool keeps working even on a slow connection.
Tips for the best result
- When the split creates many files, use Download all (ZIP) to save them in one archive. Each file name contains its page range, so the parts stay in order.
- Ranges may overlap. For example, 1-5, 1, 6-10 creates a file with pages 1 to 5, a separate copy of page 1, and a file with pages 6 to 10.
- Leave the start or end of a range open to reach the first or last page: -3 means pages 1 to 3, and 8- means page 8 to the end.
- To keep only some pages in a single new file, use Extract Pages from PDF. To delete a few pages, use PDF Page Remover.
How Split PDF works in your browser
The PDF is opened with pdf-lib, an open-source PDF library that runs in your browser. Pages are copied, rotated, resized or cropped at the PDF object level, so text stays text and vector graphics stay sharp.
Because the original page content is copied rather than re-rendered, there is no quality loss. The only exception is an option that explicitly turns pages into images. The new PDF is assembled in memory on your device and offered as a download.
Privacy and security
Most online converters upload your files to a server, process them there and keep a copy for some time. Split PDF works differently: the code is downloaded to your browser once, and your files are read and written only on your device.
You can check this yourself: after the page has loaded, turn off your internet connection and the tool still works. This makes it safe for contracts, IDs, medical records, private photos and unreleased work.
Frequently asked questions
Is Split PDF free?
Yes. Split PDF on FansBond is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your files are processed in your browser on your own device. They are never sent to FansBond or anyone else.
Do I need to install any software?
No. It works in any modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your device, the practical limit depends on your device's memory. Most phones handle files of a few hundred megabytes, and computers handle much more.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
Not while it is encrypted. The tool shows a message asking you to remove the protection, even if the file opens without a password but has restrictions. Use Unlock PDF first, then split the unlocked copy.
Are bookmarks and form fields kept in the parts?
The page content, including text, images and web links, is copied unchanged. Bookmarks are not copied into the new files, and form fields may stop being fillable. Links that jump to a page that ends up in a different part can no longer work.
Can I split several PDFs at once?
Yes. Add several files and each one is split with the same settings. All parts appear in one list, named after their source file, and can be downloaded together as a ZIP. If a custom range does not exist in one of the files, the tool stops with a page number message.
