What Protect PDF does
Protect PDF adds a password to a PDF so that only people who know it can open the file. It is a common step before emailing contracts, medical reports, payslips or copies of ID documents, or before storing them in a shared folder.
qpdf encrypts the whole document with 256-bit AES and saves a copy named with -protected. You can also set an owner password and restrict printing, copying and editing. The encryption protects the content from anyone without the open password, while the restrictions are followed by standard PDF viewers.
How to use Protect PDF
- Drop your PDF files into the box.
- Set the options for protect pdf.
- Click Apply. The PDF is processed on your device.
- Download the new PDF.
When to use Protect PDF
- Protect a scanned passport or ID card copy before sending it by email to a landlord, bank or employer.
- Encrypt payslips or HR documents before sharing them, and send the password separately, for example in a text message.
- Lock a medical report or test result before uploading it to a shared cloud folder used by family members.
- Share an exam or price list that people can open and read but not print, using an owner password and restrictions.
Settings explained
- Password
- Required. This is the password needed to open the file. Use at least 12 characters, ideally several unrelated words, because a short password can be found by trying many combinations.
- Owner password (optional)
- A second password that grants full access and allows changing the permissions. If you leave it empty, a random owner password is created, so the restrictions apply to everyone but nobody can lift them later.
- Permissions
- Allow everything, the default, only adds the password. Block printing stops printing in standard viewers. Block printing, copying and editing also blocks copying text, adding comments, filling in forms and changing pages.
What is PDF?
PDF (Portable Document Format) is a document format introduced by Adobe in 1993. Files use the .pdf extension.
PDF was created by Adobe to show documents the same way on any device and printer. A PDF file describes pages with text, fonts, vector graphics and images at fixed positions. It became an open ISO standard in 2008, and there are special variants such as PDF/A for archiving and PDF/X for printing.
PDF is the right choice for documents that must look the same everywhere, such as contracts, invoices, forms, manuals, reports and files for printing. It also supports digital signatures, fillable forms, comments and password protection.
PDF is hard to edit, because text is stored as positioned pieces, not as flowing paragraphs. Converting a PDF to Word may change the layout. Scanned PDFs contain pictures of text, not real text, unless OCR has been applied.
All major web browsers open PDF files directly. Windows, macOS, iOS and most Android phones include a PDF viewer, and Adobe Acrobat Reader and many free apps can view, annotate and fill PDF forms on all platforms.
Why use FansBond Protect PDF
Most online converters upload your files to their servers. FansBond Protect PDF does the work inside your browser instead, using WebAssembly and modern browser APIs. Your files stay on your device, which is safer for private photos, contracts and unreleased work, and it is often faster because nothing has to upload or download.
There are no queues, no watermarks and no account. Once the page has loaded, the tool keeps working even on a slow connection.
Tips for the best result
- Never send the password in the same email as the file. Use a phone call, a text message or a different messaging app instead.
- Store the password somewhere safe, for example in a password manager. AES-256 encryption cannot be removed without it, not even by this tool.
- If you choose restrictions and may want to change them later, set your own owner password. Also keep in mind that some apps ignore restrictions, so do not rely on them alone for confidential content.
- If the PDF is already protected, remove the old protection with Unlock PDF first, then protect the unlocked copy with the new settings.
How Protect PDF works in your browser
Encryption and decryption use qpdf, a widely used open-source PDF toolkit, compiled to WebAssembly. Protected files use 256-bit AES, the strongest encryption method in the PDF standard.
The password you type is used only inside your browser tab to encrypt or decrypt the file. It is never sent anywhere and is not stored after you close the page.
Privacy and security
Most online converters upload your files to a server, process them there and keep a copy for some time. Protect PDF works differently: the code is downloaded to your browser once, and your files are read and written only on your device.
You can check this yourself: after the page has loaded, turn off your internet connection and the tool still works. This makes it safe for contracts, IDs, medical records, private photos and unreleased work.
Frequently asked questions
Is Protect PDF free?
Yes. Protect PDF on FansBond is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your files are processed in your browser on your own device. They are never sent to FansBond or anyone else.
Do I need to install any software?
No. It works in any modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your device, the practical limit depends on your device's memory. Most phones handle files of a few hundred megabytes, and computers handle much more.
How secure is the encryption?
AES-256 is the strongest encryption in the PDF standard and is supported by Adobe Acrobat Reader X and later, browser PDF viewers and current mobile apps. The real security depends on your password: a long, unique password cannot practically be guessed, while a short or common one can.
Does protecting change the content of my PDF?
No. Pages, text, images, links, bookmarks and form fields stay as they were; only encryption is added, and the file size grows very little. Once someone opens the file with the password, it looks and works the same as before, within the permissions you set.
Can I protect several PDFs with the same password?
Yes. Add all the files, enter the password and choose the permissions once. Every file is encrypted with the same settings and saved with -protected in its name, and you can download them together as a ZIP. The ZIP itself is not password protected.
