GIF Maker online

What GIF Maker does

A GIF maker puts several still images into one animated GIF that shows them one after another, like a slideshow or a flip book. It is used for simple animations, before-and-after comparisons, product photo sequences and memes.

Every image is scaled to the GIF size you choose, either fitted inside the frame or cropped to fill it, and drawn on the background color. Each frame is then reduced to a palette of up to 256 colors and written to the GIF with the frame duration you set.

How to use GIF Maker

1. Drop your images and put them in the order you want.
2. Choose the size, timing or layout.
3. Click Create.
4. Download the finished file.

When to use GIF Maker

• Combine several product photos into one animated GIF that shows every angle in a single image slot.
• Make a before-and-after GIF from two photos of a room, a haircut or an edited picture.
• Animate a sequence of drawings or stop-motion photos into a short looping animation.
• Turn slides or screenshots into a simple animated walkthrough for a chat message or a README file.

Settings explained

Frame duration

How long each image stays on screen, in milliseconds, from 20 to 10,000. The default of 500 shows two images per second; use 1000 to 2000 for slideshows and 50 to 100 for smooth animation.

Width

The width of the GIF in pixels, from 16 to 2000, with 600 as the default. The height is taken from the aspect ratio of the first image in the list.

Fit

Fit inside shows each whole image and fills the empty space with the background color. Fill and crop covers the whole frame and cuts off the edges of images that have a different shape.

Background color

Fills the space around images that do not cover the frame, and any transparent areas. The default is white. The finished GIF has no transparent pixels.

Loop forever

When it is on, which is the default, the animation repeats endlessly. Turn it off to play the images once and stop on the last one.

Format comparison

What is PNG?

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is an image format introduced by W3C in 1996. It uses lossless compression and supports transparency. Files use the .png extension.

PNG was created in the mid-1990s as a free replacement for GIF, whose compression method was covered by patents at the time. It applies a filtering step and then compresses pixels with the DEFLATE algorithm, so every pixel is kept exactly. It supports full color, grayscale, palette images and a full alpha channel for smooth transparency.

PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, icons, diagrams, user interface graphics and any image with sharp edges, text or flat colors. It is also a safe format for images that need transparent backgrounds or will be edited again.

Because PNG is lossless, photos saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo saved as JPG or WebP. PNG has no lossy mode, and a standard PNG file cannot store animation.

PNG opens in every modern web browser, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, and in practically all image viewers, image editors, office suites and design tools. It is one of the most widely supported image formats.

What is JPG?

JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is an image format introduced by JPEG in 1992. It uses lossy compression and has no transparency. Files use the .jpg or .jpeg extension.

JPG, also written JPEG, is named after the Joint Photographic Experts Group, which wrote the standard. It splits an image into small blocks, transforms each block with a discrete cosine transform and discards the fine detail that the eye notices least. A quality setting controls how much detail is removed and therefore the file size.

JPG is the standard choice for photographs and other images with smooth color gradients, such as camera pictures, product photos and images for email or social media. It gives small files with good visual quality at moderate settings.

JPG does not support transparency or animation. Each time a JPG is edited and saved again, it loses a little more quality. Text, line art and sharp edges can show visible blocks or halos at low quality settings.

JPG is supported everywhere: in all web browsers, on all desktop and mobile operating systems, and on cameras, phones and printers. All image editors and office programs open it. It is the most compatible format for sharing photos.

What is WEBP?

WEBP (WebP) is an image format introduced by Google in 2010. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, supports transparency and can store animation. Files use the .webp extension.

WebP was developed by Google to make images on the web smaller. Its lossy mode is based on the VP8 video codec, and it also has a separate lossless mode. Both modes can include an alpha channel for transparency. The format also supports animation, so it can replace JPG, PNG and GIF in many cases.

WebP is a good choice for images on websites and in apps, where smaller files load faster. It works for photos, graphics with transparency and short animations, often at a smaller size than JPG, PNG or GIF.

Some older software, image editors, print services and upload forms still do not accept WebP. Lossy WebP always reduces color resolution, which can blur fine colored detail. At very high quality settings, the size benefit over JPG can be small.

All current major browsers display WebP, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on recent versions of macOS and iOS. Windows, macOS, Android and most modern image editors open it, but some older desktop programs do not.

What is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF)) is an image format introduced by MPEG in 2015. It uses lossy compression and supports transparency. Files use the .heic or .heif extension.

HEIC is an image stored in the HEIF container and compressed with the HEVC (H.265) video codec. Apple made it the default photo format on iPhones starting with iOS 11. One file can hold several images, depth maps and other data, and it keeps quality similar to JPG at a noticeably smaller size.

HEIC is good for storing many photos on a phone, because it saves space while keeping good quality. It can also keep extra information in the same file, such as the depth data used for portrait effects.

Most websites and many Windows and Android apps cannot open HEIC files directly. The HEVC codec is covered by patents, which limits free support. When you share photos outside Apple devices, converting to JPG is often necessary.

HEIC opens natively on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Recent Windows versions can open it with the HEIF and HEVC extensions from the Microsoft Store, and many recent Android phones can read it. Most browsers other than Safari cannot display it.

Why use FansBond GIF Maker

Most online converters upload your files to their servers. FansBond GIF Maker does the work inside your browser instead, using WebAssembly and modern browser APIs. Your files stay on your device, which is safer for private photos, contracts and unreleased work, and it is often faster because nothing has to upload or download.

There are no queues, no watermarks and no account. Once the page has loaded, the tool keeps working even on a slow connection.

Tips for the best result

• Use the up and down arrows in the file list to set the order. The first image also sets the shape of the GIF.
• Use images with the same size and shape, so every frame lines up and nothing is cropped or padded.
• Keep the width small, such as 480 or 600 pixels, when the GIF is meant for chats or email, because every frame adds to the file size.
• Photos with smooth gradients can look banded in a GIF. Graphics, drawings and screenshots with flat colors give the cleanest result.

How GIF Maker works in your browser

GIF files can only hold 256 colors per frame, so the tool analyzes each frame, builds the best palette for it and maps every pixel to that palette. Video frames are first extracted with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg.

The encoder and the GIF decoder run in JavaScript and WebAssembly inside your browser tab. Frame timing, looping and size are written directly into the GIF file, so the result plays the same way in every browser and chat app.

Privacy and security

Most online converters upload your files to a server, process them there and keep a copy for some time. GIF Maker works differently: the code is downloaded to your browser once, and your files are read and written only on your device.

You can check this yourself: after the page has loaded, turn off your internet connection and the tool still works. This makes it safe for contracts, IDs, medical records, private photos and unreleased work.
