What Unit Converter does

Unit conversion expresses the same quantity in a different unit. Unit Converter multiplies the value by exact conversion factors, for example 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg and 1 ft = 0.3048 m, which are the international definitions. Temperature uses a formula with an offset instead of a single factor.

Results update while you type and are shown with up to six decimal places, formatted for your language. A list below the result shows the same value in every other unit of the same kind, which is handy for recipes, travel, shopping, fitness and school work.

The unit of the value you type. On pages for a fixed pair, such as pounds to kilograms, it is preselected, but you can still switch to another unit of the same kind.

To

The unit you want the result in. The result box shows the converted value, and the list below shows the same value in every other unit of the category.

Value

The number to convert. You can use a dot or a comma as the decimal separator, and negative values work too, for example for temperatures below zero.

Swap

The arrow button between the two units. It exchanges the From and To units, so you can convert in the other direction without choosing the units again.

Tips for the best result

• Type numbers without thousands separators. Write 1500 or 1500.5, not 1,500.5, because a comma is read as the decimal separator.
• Data units here are decimal: 1 KB is 1,000 bytes and 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes, as storage makers count. Some operating systems count in steps of 1,024 instead.
• Cups, fluid ounces and gallons use US measures. A UK (imperial) gallon is about 4.546 liters, not 3.785 liters as in the US.
• For body weight in stone, as used in the UK and Ireland, choose stone (st) in the weight list. One stone is exactly 14 pounds.
