What PDF to Word does
Converting a PDF to Word turns fixed pages back into a document you can edit. In the default mode, PDF to Word reads the text of each page with pdf.js, joins lines into paragraphs, treats larger text as headings and lines that start with bullet characters as lists, and writes a DOCX file with real Word headings, lists and page breaks.
The other mode places an image of every page in the Word file instead. Use the tool when you only have the PDF of a contract, CV or report and need to change the wording.
How to use PDF to Word
- Drop your PDF files into the box, or click to choose them.
- Pick the output format and any options.
- Click Convert. The conversion runs on your device.
- Download each file, or all of them at once as a ZIP.
When to use PDF to Word
- Update an old CV or cover letter when only the PDF version is left on your computer.
- Reuse paragraphs from a PDF report in a new Word document without typing them again.
- Edit the text of a contract draft received as PDF and send back a version with your changes.
- Put a PDF form or brochure into Word as page images so you can add comments around it.
Settings explained
- Word output
- Editable text, the default, gives real paragraphs, headings and lists you can change. Exact layout (page images) keeps the look of every page as a picture, but the text inside cannot be edited.
- Document title (optional)
- Sets the title saved in the properties of the DOCX file, which Word shows under File and Info. Leave it empty to use the title stored in the PDF, or else the file name.
What changes when you convert PDF to DOCX
The text, headings, lists, tables and images are carried over. Fonts, exact line breaks and page layout are rebuilt for DOCX, so check the result before you send it.
Format comparison
| Format | Full name | Type | Compression | File extension | Developed by | Released |

| Portable Document Format | document | — | Adobe | 1993 | ||
| DOCX | Microsoft Word Open XML Document | document | — | .docx | Microsoft | 2007 |
Editable text or exact layout
The default mode produces real Word text. Headings are detected from font size, bullet points become Word lists, and pages are separated by page breaks, so the document is easy to edit and reflows on any screen.
The page layout mode places an image of each PDF page into the Word file. Choose it for forms, brochures or designs where the look matters more than editing the words.
What is PDF?
PDF (Portable Document Format) is a document format introduced by Adobe in 1993. Files use the .pdf extension.
PDF was created by Adobe to show documents the same way on any device and printer. A PDF file describes pages with text, fonts, vector graphics and images at fixed positions. It became an open ISO standard in 2008, and there are special variants such as PDF/A for archiving and PDF/X for printing.
PDF is the right choice for documents that must look the same everywhere, such as contracts, invoices, forms, manuals, reports and files for printing. It also supports digital signatures, fillable forms, comments and password protection.
PDF is hard to edit, because text is stored as positioned pieces, not as flowing paragraphs. Converting a PDF to Word may change the layout. Scanned PDFs contain pictures of text, not real text, unless OCR has been applied.
All major web browsers open PDF files directly. Windows, macOS, iOS and most Android phones include a PDF viewer, and Adobe Acrobat Reader and many free apps can view, annotate and fill PDF forms on all platforms.
What is DOCX?
DOCX (Microsoft Word Open XML Document) is a document format introduced by Microsoft in 2007. Files use the .docx extension.
DOCX has been the default document format of Microsoft Word since Word 2007. It is a ZIP archive that contains XML files for the text, styles, images and settings, based on the Office Open XML standard published by Ecma and ISO. It replaced the older binary DOC format.
DOCX is the right choice for documents that other people need to edit, comment on or review with tracked changes, such as reports, letters, draft contracts, CVs and school work. Most offices expect this format.
The layout can change when a DOCX file is opened in a different program, in another version of Word or on a computer without the same fonts. For final documents that must look identical everywhere, PDF is a better choice.
Microsoft Word on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and the web opens DOCX files, as do Google Docs, LibreOffice, Apple Pages and WPS Office. Web browsers cannot display DOCX files directly without an online service.
Why use FansBond PDF to Word
Most online converters upload your files to their servers. FansBond PDF to Word does the work inside your browser instead, using WebAssembly and modern browser APIs. Your files stay on your device, which is safer for private photos, contracts and unreleased work, and it is often faster because nothing has to upload or download.
There are no queues, no watermarks and no account. Once the page has loaded, the tool keeps working even on a slow connection.
Tips for the best result
- Check the result for paragraphs that are split in two. PDF stores text line by line, so a paragraph that continues on the next page becomes two paragraphs.
- Bold, italic, fonts and colors are not carried over in editable mode. Plan a quick formatting pass in Word after converting.
- Images are not copied in editable mode, and tables become plain paragraphs. Use the exact layout mode when these parts matter.
- A hyphen at the end of a line is removed when the next line starts with a lowercase letter. Check names and compound words afterwards.
How PDF to Word works in your browser
Documents are first read into a common structure of headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and images. DOCX files are read with mammoth, PDFs with pdf.js text extraction, and EPUB files are unpacked in the browser.
The structure is then written in the target format: DOCX with the docx library, PDF with pdf-lib and embedded Unicode fonts, EPUB and MOBI as standard ebook packages. The content is kept, but the exact page layout of the original is rebuilt rather than copied.
Privacy and security
Most online converters upload your files to a server, process them there and keep a copy for some time. PDF to Word works differently: the code is downloaded to your browser once, and your files are read and written only on your device.
You can check this yourself: after the page has loaded, turn off your internet connection and the tool still works. This makes it safe for contracts, IDs, medical records, private photos and unreleased work.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Yes, but a scan is a picture of text, not text. When a PDF has no text layer, FansBond places each page into the Word file as an image so nothing is lost. The words will not be editable because the tool does not run OCR.
Will tables and columns be kept?
Text, headings and lists are kept. Tables come out as plain paragraphs, and text in side-by-side columns can end up on the same line. Use the page layout mode if you need the original look.
Is PDF to Word free?
Yes. PDF to Word on FansBond is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your files are processed in your browser on your own device. They are never sent to FansBond or anyone else.
Do I need to install any software?
No. It works in any modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your device, the practical limit depends on your device's memory. Most phones handle files of a few hundred megabytes, and computers handle much more.
Why are some headings missing or wrong?
Headings are guessed from font size: lines clearly larger than the body text become headings. A PDF that uses bold text at normal size for headings gives plain paragraphs, and large text on a title page can be marked as a heading. Apply heading styles in Word afterwards.
Can I open the DOCX in Google Docs or LibreOffice?
Yes. The file is a standard DOCX built with common Word features: paragraphs, heading styles, bullet lists and page breaks. It opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Apple Pages and LibreOffice Writer.
Why is the exact layout DOCX so large?
Each page is stored as a JPEG image rendered at twice the normal PDF size, so a document with many pages adds up quickly. The editable mode stores only text and is usually much smaller. Use the exact layout only when the look of the pages matters.
