What DOCX to PDF does
DOCX to PDF converts the content of a document, not a picture of its pages. It reads the text and structure of the file: headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, links and images from DOCX, HTML, Markdown and EPUB files, and lines of text from PDF files. It then writes a new file from that structure.
PDF output is laid out again on standard pages with embedded DejaVu fonts, DOCX output uses real Word headings and lists, and HTML output is one page with its images embedded. The text is easy to reuse, but the original design, fonts and exact positions are not copied.
How to use DOCX to PDF
- Drop your DOCX files into the box, or click to choose them.
- Pick the output format and any options.
- Click Convert. The conversion runs on your device.
- Download each file, or all of them at once as a ZIP.
When to use DOCX to PDF
- Turn a Word report into a PDF to send to a client who should read it but not edit it.
- Convert a Markdown README or notes file into a clean PDF or Word document for people who do not use Markdown.
- Extract the plain text of a PDF to TXT so it can be pasted into an email, a translation tool or a search index.
- Save each page of a PDF as a JPG or PNG image to use it in slides or a social media post.
Settings explained
- Output format
- Chooses the type of file to create. Pick PDF for sharing and printing, DOCX for editing in Word, TXT for plain text, HTML for a web page, and JPG or PNG for page images where offered.
- Word output
- Shown when converting a PDF to DOCX. Editable text rebuilds paragraphs, headings and lists you can change. Exact layout (page images) puts a picture of each page into the Word file, which looks right but cannot be edited.
- Page size
- Shown when saving as PDF. Choose A4, Letter, Legal or A5. A4 is standard in most countries, and Letter is standard in the United States and Canada. The text is reflowed to fit the page.
- Orientation
- Shown when saving as PDF. Portrait suits normal text. Landscape gives wider lines and more room for tables with many columns, which are otherwise squeezed to the page width.
- Resolution
- Shown when saving page images as JPG or PNG. 150 DPI suits screens and slides, 300 DPI suits printing and zooming into small text, and 72 DPI gives small preview images.
- Document title (optional)
- Sets the title stored inside the new file, which readers and browsers show in the window or tab. Leave it empty to use the title found in the original file, or else the file name.
What changes when you convert DOCX to PDF
The text, headings, lists, tables and images are carried over. Fonts, exact line breaks and page layout are rebuilt for PDF, so check the result before you send it.
Format comparison
| Format | Full name | Type | Compression | File extension | Developed by | Released |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DOCX | Microsoft Word Open XML Document | document | — | .docx | Microsoft | 2007 |
| Portable Document Format | document | — | Adobe | 1993 |
What is kept in the PDF
Headings, bold and italic text, numbered and bulleted lists, tables, images and page breaks are carried over. Link text is kept and shown in blue, but it is not clickable in the PDF. Fonts are embedded, so accented and Cyrillic letters display correctly.
Custom Word styles and text boxes are simplified into the standard layout. Headers and footers are not included.
What is DOCX?
DOCX (Microsoft Word Open XML Document) is a document format introduced by Microsoft in 2007. Files use the .docx extension.
DOCX has been the default document format of Microsoft Word since Word 2007. It is a ZIP archive that contains XML files for the text, styles, images and settings, based on the Office Open XML standard published by Ecma and ISO. It replaced the older binary DOC format.
DOCX is the right choice for documents that other people need to edit, comment on or review with tracked changes, such as reports, letters, draft contracts, CVs and school work. Most offices expect this format.
The layout can change when a DOCX file is opened in a different program, in another version of Word or on a computer without the same fonts. For final documents that must look identical everywhere, PDF is a better choice.
Microsoft Word on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and the web opens DOCX files, as do Google Docs, LibreOffice, Apple Pages and WPS Office. Web browsers cannot display DOCX files directly without an online service.
What is PDF?
PDF (Portable Document Format) is a document format introduced by Adobe in 1993. Files use the .pdf extension.
PDF was created by Adobe to show documents the same way on any device and printer. A PDF file describes pages with text, fonts, vector graphics and images at fixed positions. It became an open ISO standard in 2008, and there are special variants such as PDF/A for archiving and PDF/X for printing.
PDF is the right choice for documents that must look the same everywhere, such as contracts, invoices, forms, manuals, reports and files for printing. It also supports digital signatures, fillable forms, comments and password protection.
PDF is hard to edit, because text is stored as positioned pieces, not as flowing paragraphs. Converting a PDF to Word may change the layout. Scanned PDFs contain pictures of text, not real text, unless OCR has been applied.
All major web browsers open PDF files directly. Windows, macOS, iOS and most Android phones include a PDF viewer, and Adobe Acrobat Reader and many free apps can view, annotate and fill PDF forms on all platforms.
Why use FansBond DOCX to PDF
Most online converters upload your files to their servers. FansBond DOCX to PDF does the work inside your browser instead, using WebAssembly and modern browser APIs. Your files stay on your device, which is safer for private photos, contracts and unreleased work, and it is often faster because nothing has to upload or download.
There are no queues, no watermarks and no account. Once the page has loaded, the tool keeps working even on a slow connection.
Tips for the best result
- For a PDF identical to the Word layout, use Print to PDF in Word or Google Docs. This tool rebuilds the layout with its own fonts and spacing.
- Headings come through best when the Word file uses real heading styles, such as Heading 1 and Heading 2, rather than large bold text.
- Images linked from the internet in HTML files are not downloaded. Only images stored inside the file are placed in PDF, DOCX and EPUB output.
- PDF output supports Latin, Greek and Cyrillic text. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters, and right-to-left scripts such as Arabic or Hebrew, may not display correctly.
How DOCX to PDF works in your browser
Documents are first read into a common structure of headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and images. DOCX files are read with mammoth, PDFs with pdf.js text extraction, and EPUB files are unpacked in the browser.
The structure is then written in the target format: DOCX with the docx library, PDF with pdf-lib and embedded Unicode fonts, EPUB and MOBI as standard ebook packages. The content is kept, but the exact page layout of the original is rebuilt rather than copied.
Privacy and security
Most online converters upload your files to a server, process them there and keep a copy for some time. DOCX to PDF works differently: the code is downloaded to your browser once, and your files are read and written only on your device.
You can check this yourself: after the page has loaded, turn off your internet connection and the tool still works. This makes it safe for contracts, IDs, medical records, private photos and unreleased work.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pick the page size?
Yes. Choose A4, Letter, Legal or A5, in portrait or landscape, before you convert.
Is DOCX to PDF free?
Yes. DOCX to PDF on FansBond is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your files are processed in your browser on your own device. They are never sent to FansBond or anyone else.
Do I need to install any software?
No. It works in any modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your device, the practical limit depends on your device's memory. Most phones handle files of a few hundred megabytes, and computers handle much more.
Will the PDF look exactly like my Word document?
No. The content is kept: text, headings, bold and italic, lists, tables, links and images. The layout is rebuilt with standard fonts, margins and spacing, so line and page breaks will differ. Headers, footers, columns and custom styles are not reproduced, and links appear blue but are not clickable.
Can I convert a scanned PDF?
A scanned PDF contains pictures of pages, not text. When no text is found, the pages are placed into the new file as images, so nothing is lost, but the words cannot be edited or searched. Saving a scan as TXT gives an error, because this tool does not do OCR.
What happens to tables when converting from PDF?
PDF files store text as positioned lines, not as tables. The converter rebuilds paragraphs, headings and bullet lists from those lines, but table cells come out as plain text, and text in side-by-side columns can be merged into the same lines. Tables from DOCX, HTML and EPUB files are kept.
