What PST'den EST'ye does

Time zone conversion shows what one moment is called in another part of the world. PST'den EST'ye uses the time zone database built into your browser (the IANA tz database), which stores each zone's offset from UTC and its daylight saving time rules.

You pick a date and time in one zone, and the tool calculates the matching local time in the other zone for that specific date, so the result is correct in both winter and summer. It is useful for meetings, live streams, flights and calls with people in other regions.

When to use PST'den EST'ye

• Tell followers in Europe and Asia when a live stream that starts at 6 PM Eastern Time begins for them.
• Check the local arrival time of a flight that leaves in one time zone and lands in another.
• Plan a webinar in the weeks when Europe and North America have not yet both changed their clocks.

Settings explained

From

The time zone of the time you enter. Zones are listed by city and name, for example New York – Eastern Time. Pages for a fixed pair, such as PST to EST, preselect it, but you can change it.

Date and time

The date and local time in the From zone. It starts at the current time. The date matters, because daylight saving time can change the difference between two zones.

To

The time zone to convert into. The result shows the weekday, date, time and zone name, and the line below lists both times with their offsets from UTC.

Swap

Exchanges the two zones and moves the converted time into the input field, so you can look at the same moment from the other side.

Now

Resets the input to the current date and time in the From zone. Use it to see what time it is right now in the other zone.

Pacific Time (PST and PDT)

Pacific Time is used on the west coast of North America, including California, Washington, Oregon, most of Nevada and most of British Columbia in Canada. Baja California in Mexico also follows Pacific Time. Pacific Standard Time (PST) is UTC−8. During daylight saving time, clocks move forward one hour to Pacific Daylight Time (PDT), which is UTC−7.

In the United States, daylight saving time starts at 2:00 a.m. local time on the second Sunday of March and ends at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November, a rule in place since 2007. Major cities on Pacific Time include Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas and Vancouver. Pacific Time is three hours behind Eastern Time.

Eastern Time (EST and EDT)

Eastern Time is used on the east coast of North America, including New York, most of Florida, Georgia, Michigan and the other eastern states, as well as most of Ontario and Quebec in Canada. Eastern Standard Time (EST) is UTC−5. During daylight saving time, clocks move forward one hour to Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), which is UTC−4. Panama, Jamaica and the Mexican state of Quintana Roo use UTC−5 all year.

Daylight saving time on Eastern Time starts on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November, the US rule since 2007, and Canada follows the same dates. Major cities on Eastern Time include New York, Washington, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Detroit, Toronto and Montreal. Eastern Time is one hour ahead of Central Time and three hours ahead of Pacific Time.

Tips for the best result

• The United States and Europe change clocks on different dates. For two to three weeks in March and a week from late October, the usual gap is one hour smaller.
• Most of Arizona does not use daylight saving time, so its difference from other US zones changes during the year. Choose Phoenix rather than Denver for Arizona.
• When you share a meeting time, include the date and the zone abbreviation or UTC offset shown in the result, so nobody has to guess.
• Some zones are offset by half an hour, such as India at UTC+5:30. Check the minutes in the result, not only the hour.

How PST'den EST'ye works in your browser

Time zones come from the IANA time zone database that is built into your browser and operating system. It knows the daylight saving rules for every region, including past and future changes.

When you pick a date, the tool calculates the UTC offset of both zones for that exact day. This is why the result is correct even in the weeks when one region has switched to daylight saving time and the other has not.

Privacy and security

Most online converters upload your files to a server, process them there and keep a copy for some time. PST'den EST'ye works differently: the code is downloaded to your browser once, and your files are read and written only on your device.

You can check this yourself: after the page has loaded, turn off your internet connection and the tool still works. This makes it safe for contracts, IDs, medical records, private photos and unreleased work.
