Foot (ft)

Meter (m)

The meter, also spelled metre, is the SI base unit of length (symbol m). Since 1983, it has been defined as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second, which fixes the speed of light at exactly 299,792,458 meters per second. The meter was first introduced in France in the 1790s.

The meter is used for length and distance in nearly every country and in all scientific work. One meter equals 100 centimeters, and 1000 meters make one kilometer. One meter is about 3.28 feet or 39.37 inches. As a practical reference, an interior door is usually a little less than one meter wide, and a long step by an adult is close to one meter.

• Type numbers without thousands separators. Write 1500 or 1500.5, not 1,500.5, because a comma is read as the decimal separator.
