What GIF to MP4 does
MP4 is a video format that stores animation far more efficiently than GIF, so converting a GIF to MP4 often makes it many times smaller. Many websites and social networks also accept MP4 uploads where GIF files are not allowed.
The tool reads every frame of the GIF and encodes it as H.264 video with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The frame timing of the GIF is kept, the video has no sound track, and the file is arranged so it can start playing before it has fully loaded.
How to use GIF to MP4
- Drop your GIF files into the box, or click to choose them.
- Pick the output format and any options.
- Click Convert. The conversion runs on your device.
- Download each file, or all of them at once as a ZIP.
When to use GIF to MP4
- Replace a large GIF on a website with a muted, looping MP4 video that loads much faster.
- Post an animation on Instagram or TikTok, which accept MP4 video uploads but not GIF files.
- Bring an animated GIF into a video editor such as iMovie or Premiere, which import MP4 more reliably than GIF.
- Send a long animated GIF in a chat app or by email as a much smaller MP4 file.
Settings explained
- Convert
- There are no settings to adjust. Drop one or more GIFs and click Convert; each becomes an MP4 with H.264 video, the format that nearly every phone, browser and video editor plays.
- Cancel
- Stops the conversion that is running. Large or long GIFs can take a minute because every frame is encoded on your device; cancel and try a smaller file if it is too slow.
- Download all (ZIP)
- Appears when more than one GIF has been converted. It saves all MP4 files in one ZIP file, and each video can still be downloaded on its own.
What changes when you convert GIF to MP4
A video file is usually 5 to 10 times smaller than the same animation as a GIF, and it plays more smoothly. Social networks and chat apps often convert GIFs to video anyway.

What is GIF?
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is an image format introduced by CompuServe in 1987. It uses lossless compression, supports transparency and can store animation. Files use the .gif extension.
GIF was introduced by CompuServe, and the later GIF89a version added animation timing and transparency. Each frame uses a palette of up to 256 colors and is compressed with the LZW algorithm. The LZW patents caused disputes in the 1990s, but they have expired and GIF is now free to use.
GIF is useful for short, simple animations, reaction images and small graphics with few colors, especially where an animation must play without a video player, such as in some email clients, chat apps and older websites.
The 256 color limit makes photos and video look grainy or banded. Animated GIFs are very large compared with the same clip as MP4 or WebM. Each pixel is either fully transparent or fully visible, so edges can look rough.
GIF opens and animates in every web browser, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, and in almost all messaging apps, email clients and image viewers. Some image editors only show or edit the first frame.
What is MP4?
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a video format introduced by MPEG in 2001. It uses lossy compression. Files use the .mp4 extension.
MP4 is a container format defined in part 14 of the MPEG-4 standard and based on Apple's QuickTime file format. It holds separate video, audio and subtitle tracks. The video is usually H.264 or H.265, sometimes AV1, and the audio is usually AAC. The codecs inside, not the container, decide the quality.
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the most compatible choice for sharing video. It works well for uploads to social media and video sites, playback on phones and TVs, and video embedded in websites.
Compatibility depends on the codecs inside. An MP4 with H.265 or AV1 video may not play on older devices or in every browser. H.264 and H.265 are patented codecs. Editing and saving again with a lossy codec reduces quality.
MP4 plays in all major web browsers, on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, on smart TVs and game consoles, and in players such as VLC. H.264 MP4 is the safest choice when you do not know the device.
Why use FansBond GIF to MP4
Most online converters upload your files to their servers. FansBond GIF to MP4 does the work inside your browser instead, using WebAssembly and modern browser APIs. Your files stay on your device, which is safer for private photos, contracts and unreleased work, and it is often faster because nothing has to upload or download.
There are no queues, no watermarks and no account. Once the page has loaded, the tool keeps working even on a slow connection.
Tips for the best result
- To make the MP4 behave like a GIF on a website, use a video element with the autoplay, loop, muted and playsinline attributes.
- H.264 video needs an even width and height, so a GIF with an odd size loses one row or column of pixels.
- Converting is usually the best way to shrink a large GIF: the MP4 keeps every frame and color, while compressing the GIF removes colors or frames.
- Very short GIFs become very short videos. Some platforms require a minimum video length, so check their rules before uploading.
How GIF to MP4 works in your browser
Video and audio are processed with FFmpeg, the open-source media toolkit behind most video software, compiled to WebAssembly. Video is encoded with H.264 for MP4, MOV and MKV, VP8 for WebM, and audio with AAC, MP3, Vorbis, Opus or FLAC depending on the format.
WebAssembly FFmpeg runs on your device's processor without a server. It is slower than a native desktop app, so a long video can take a few minutes. Keep the tab open until the progress bar finishes.
Privacy and security
Most online converters upload your files to a server, process them there and keep a copy for some time. GIF to MP4 works differently: the code is downloaded to your browser once, and your files are read and written only on your device.
You can check this yourself: after the page has loaded, turn off your internet connection and the tool still works. This makes it safe for contracts, IDs, medical records, private photos and unreleased work.
Frequently asked questions
Is GIF to MP4 free?
Yes. GIF to MP4 on FansBond is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your files are processed in your browser on your own device. They are never sent to FansBond or anyone else.
Do I need to install any software?
No. It works in any modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit. Because the work happens on your device, the practical limit depends on your device's memory. Most phones handle files of a few hundred megabytes, and computers handle much more.
Will I lose quality when saving as MP4?
MP4 uses lossy compression, so some detail is discarded to make the file smaller. The default settings keep the result visually very close to the original, and you can raise the quality setting if you need to.
Will the MP4 loop like the GIF?
MP4 files have no built-in loop setting, so whether the video repeats depends on the player. Websites can use the loop attribute, and many chat apps and social networks loop short videos automatically. In a desktop video player, turn on repeat.
What happens to transparent areas?
H.264 MP4 video cannot store transparency. Transparent pixels in the GIF become a solid color in the video, usually black. If the GIF was designed for a light background, the video can look quite different from the original.
How long does the conversion take?
Short GIFs convert in a few seconds. The video encoder runs as WebAssembly on a single processor core, so a long GIF or one with a large frame size can take a minute or more. Keep the tab open until the download appears.
